With the England Euro 2012 dream in pieces after being shattered during Sunday night’s game against Cesare Prandelli’s Italian squad. With expectations high, and the dedication of fans being clearly heard throughout the stadium, the players could see how crucial this game was, and thus warmed up for a fiery display, hoping not to go home empty handed.
With the first whistle blown, atmosphere within the local pub turned to an unnerving silence, where all that could be heard was an occasionally clanging of glasses, and our succulent hog roast cooking away. Within gasps of unease during every touch made by the Italian squad, we could see that our food needed to work its magic on these devoted fans. With powerful run down the pitch, breaking through the Italian defence, the atmosphere in the pub slowly beginning to rise, fans looked on hoping to take the upper-hand during the early stages of the game; however, the ability for England to secure a goal was appearing harder than intended.
As the half-time whistle blew, the anticipation was high, with fans hoping that Roy Hodgson would give the squad the inspirational talk needed to drive them to victory and secure a place in the semi-finals. With the second half underway, England were still unable to secure a goal, result in extra-time being played. With 120 minutes played, the scoreboard still appeared 0-0, causing the decisive game resulting in a penalty shootout, with fans everywhere on the edge of their seats.
With minutes, England’s dream had been shattered, with the Italian side placing 4 goals past goalkeeper Joe Hart, whilst England only placing 2 goals past Gianluigi Buffon. Witnessing the final attempt, we knew we had to work fast to ensure fans could ease their disappointment from the games result, taking their mind off the result and focusing on the tenderness of our hog roast. With the silence reappearing, we could see that the hog was working its magic, and we had worked fast, with the occasional sounds of people’s reactions, the room was slowly forgetting the result of the quarter-final game.
