Skol! In recent years, we’ve seen a huge influx of TV shows, movies, books and even video games that centre around ‘The Viking Age’. And as a result, Viking culture and Norse mythology have become a growing pop culture trend, which has inspired fashion choices, hairstyles and even events. Yes, you read that last part right!
Drawing inspiration from ancient Scandinavian traditions, one local couple, Paul and Bella, had decided to start their married life with a Viking-themed wedding! And since hog roasts were an extremely important fixture at these events, the smitten couple enlisted our help to make the experience feel more authentic and feed their 90-something guests with a delicious meal.
As always, Hog Roast Evenley was happy to be of assistance, and our catering managers, Andrew and James, went above and beyond to deliver an authentic experience for the couple. The guests helped, too, by fully embracing the theme and wearing ensembles that suited the era!
The ceremony itself took place at a cosy log cabin, which looked out onto a scenic lake. The wispy winter skies and evergreen trees provided the perfect backdrop for the celebrations and the scene was further enhanced by the props Paul and Bella had chosen for the occasion.
Since preparing our hog roasts takes several hours, Hog Roast Evenley was privileged to spend all morning at this stunning location. Using our trusty Hog Master, Andrew and James spit-roasted a full-sized free-range pig over real flames for the entirety of the morning. They had prepared the meat beforehand by scoring the skin and rubbing it down with salt, which helped to ensure the crackling was perfectly crisp and full of flavour by the time the guests were ready to eat.
While the meat cooked, the team prepared savoury sage and onion stuffing, fresh salads, a medley of glazed seasonal vegetables and roasted potatoes, along with plant-based BBQ pulled jackfruit rolls for non-meat-eating guests.
Everyone was extremely impressed with the Hog Roast Evenley spread, which they washed down with tankards and rhytons of ale. Bringing the meal to a satisfying end, our team served a refreshing fresh fruit salad and a slice of the couple’s wedding cake.
